Every May, the state of Sabah, Malaysia, celebrates the spirit of Kaamatan, a harvest festival steeped in tradition and community pride. One of its anticipated highlights is the Unduk Ngadau pageant, a cultural event that goes far beyond beauty.
Rooted in Kadazan-Dusun legend, Unduk Ngadau honors Huminodun, a revered figure who selflessly gave her life for her people’s wellbeing. Contestants from all over the country gather to showcase not just grace and poise, but cultural knowledge, traditional attire, and fluency in their mother tongue.
This year, 51 participants will compete for the coveted title of Unduk Ngadau 2025. The festivities begin with the Sodop Pintutunan ceremony on May 28, leading up to the grand finals on May 31. More than a pageant, Unduk Ngadau is a heartfelt tribute to Sabah’s rich heritage and the enduring strength of its indigenous identity.
