From Trail to Summit: Sheron & Tahira’s Next Challenge

After claiming the champion titles at Timpohon Run 2024, Sheron Sariman and Tahira Najmunisaa are setting their sights even higher, the 32nd Mount Kinabalu International Marathon 2025.

Both are no strangers to pushing limits. Sheron took 1st place in the Tropical Rainforest Run 2024 (Men’s Open), while Tahira has twice conquered the Climbathon podium, 3rd place in 2016 and an impressive 2nd place in 2024.

For them, running isn’t just about crossing a finish line. It’s about challenges, little victories, and moments they’ll never forget. Read more about how it all started, what keeps them going, and their advice for anyone ready to take on the mountain.

1. Tell us a bit about your running journey. How did you get started?

Sheron: I’ve been running since my school days. Cross-country, long-distance track, you name it. However, I stopped running altogether after graduating in 2018. In 2023, I tried making a comeback with the Nabalu Countryside Run, but it didn’t stick.

Things changed in 2024 when I joined the Kadamian Adventure Race (KAR). That’s when my love for running came back strong. Since then, I’ve taken part in eight races: KAR, Borneo TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon, Gumantung Run, Timpohon Run, Tropical Rainforest Run, Kiulu Adventure Challenge, Borneo Ultra Highland Marathon, and Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon.

Tahira: I started running after finishing school, mostly in trail events. My first few races were part of the mountain series, which I joined because my friends encouraged me. That’s how my interest in trail and hill running began.

2. What made you want to join the Timpohon Run?

Sheron: It was my first time joining, so I really wanted to experience the route for myself. Plus, I had my eyes on the podium.

Tahira: A friend told me about it, and I realised it was the day before the Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon. I thought, “Perfect, I can use it as a trial run.” I also hoped more people would hear about the Timpohon Run and feel inspired to join next year, especially those who come to watch the Climbathon but aren’t running.

3. How did you prepare for the race?

Sheron: For me, it’s about getting enough mileage to build fitness and training my mind to push through the hard moments.

Tahira: I was already training for the Climbathon 2024, so I was physically and mentally ready for Timpohon Run.

4. What was your first impression of the route?

Sheron: Refreshing! The cool air at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, surrounded by nature, was just beautiful.

Tahira: My first thought was, “Uh oh, uphill!” as we started running towards Timpohon Gate. But once you reach the gate and head downhill into the trail, that’s when the fun starts.

5. How did the route challenges affect your performance?

Sheron: The trail was a bit slippery because it rained the day before, but that didn’t slow me down.

Tahira: The toughest part was the first 5km on the uphill road. Once we hit the trail, it got easier and more enjoyable.

6. Any unexpected challenges during the race?

Sheron: There’s always the risk of injury or an accident, so I make sure to run carefully and put safety first.

Tahira: Luckily, no surprises for me this time! Everything went smoothly, and the race organisers did a great job.

7. What was your most memorable moment?

Sheron: Getting on the podium, that feeling is unbeatable. And honestly, hearing people cheer for me along the way… that pushed me to keep going.

Tahira: It was crossing the finish line and having everyone clap and congratulate me. That energy just hits different. Plus, running the trail with my friend made it even more special.

8. What makes Timpohon Run special?

Sheron: The weather! It’s cold from start to finish due to its mountainous location.

Tahira: The location, hands down. It’s a friendly, local event right at the foot of Mount Kinabalu. Perfect for people who can’t join the Climbathon but still want a taste of it.

9. How does Timpohon Run compare to the Tropical Rainforest Run?

Sheron: The Tropical Rainforest Run in Tawau is tougher; the terrain is all forest trail, with roots, rocks, and it can be very muddy when it rains. You’ll be slipping and sliding the whole way. But both runs have that cold, refreshing weather that makes it all worth it.

10. Any tips for runners thinking about joining Timpohon Run or Tropical Rainforest Run?

Sheron: Just do it. To all Malaysian runners, especially my fellow Sabahans, you have to give Timpohon Run and the Tropical Rainforest Run in Tawau a go. It’s such a great way to push yourself, test your mental strength, and just soak in nature. Seriously… if not now, then when? If not us, then who?

Tahira: My advice? Hill training, hill training, hill training. Do lots of repeats and get comfy running in hilly areas. And practise your downhills too, on both trail and tarmac. That’s your secret weapon for catching up or overtaking other runners when the moment comes.

11. What’s next for you in your running journey?

Sheron: Right now, I’m all about training hard and, fingers crossed, one day representing Sabah, and maybe even Malaysia, on the international stage. This year’s big goal? Summiting Mount Kinabalu in October and then moving into ULTRA distances to prep for the Asia Trail Master.

Tahira: I’m already signed up for Climbathon this year, so my mission is clear: get my time down to under five hours. And I’ll keep joining trail runs in the lead-up. The more I race, the sharper I’ll be.

12. Any running myths you’d like to bust?

Tahira: I don’t believe in the term “newbie runner.” We’ve all been running since we were kids; we just forget about it as we grow older. Running is like flipping a switch in your muscle memory. It doesn’t matter how old you are; you can always start running again.

For Sheron and Tahira, running isn’t just about medals or finish times. It’s about finding out what you’re made of, embracing the grind, and creating moments you’ll carry with you long after the finish line.

Whether you’re a first-timer testing the waters or a seasoned runner chasing your next big goal, Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, Timpohon Run, and Tropical Rainforest Run will show you what it truly means to push beyond your limits. From the cool mountain air to the rugged forest trails, every step is an adventure that connects you with Sabah’s wild beauty and warm community spirit.
