Keningau students win innovation medal with social impact project

KENINGAU (March 19): Two third-year students from the Electrical Technology program at Keningau Vocational College (KVC), Claijster Christian Sylvester and Alleyson Voo, have won a silver medal in the INNOVEX 2025 innovation competition with their innovation which is a miniature model of an electrical substation.

The results of the competition, organized by Innovation Excellence Ventures, were announced on March 14 via the organizer’s official website.

The students developed this innovation as a social impact project aimed at educational purposes, particularly to spark interest in electrical engineering among primary and lower secondary school students.

In addition, they use this innovation to teach basic electrical safety, especially concerning substations, electrical equipment and power sources at home that could cause electrocution, particularly during disasters such as floods.

This innovation provides a live demonstration of how electricity is distributed from substations to houses which makes it a more effective tool to draw public interest and increase their awareness about electricity distribution and it can cultivate interest among school pupils to pursue education in electrical engineering and technology.

It also helps them to remain safe from electrical shock accidents which have been recently increasing nationwide due to flash floods.

Claijster and Alleyson have participated in six educational exhibition programs in rural schools where they used these events as a platform to educate the public with their innovation.

The college director, Lumang Anak Lang, expressed great pride in the students’ achievement. He praised their success in creating an educational tool that not only inspires school students to pursue further studies in vocational colleges but also raises awareness about electrical safety to reduce the risk of electrocution.

He commended their efforts, which align with the national education goals, especially in vocational education, by positively impacting the local community.
