Tabin Wildlife Reserve is home to an exceptional array of Borneo’s rare and endangered species, including the Borneo Pygmy elephants, Clouded Leopards, Bornean Sun Bear, Orangutan, Tembadau (Banteng), and about 42 indigenous families representing more than 300 species of jewel-bright birdlife. One of the highlights of Tabin is the active and mineral-rich mud volcanoes, attracting frequent visits by wildlife for their mineral intake and present an ideal platform for wildlife observation and bird watching. Here, you’ll get a taste of nature like nowhere else.

Lahad Datu is located in the East coast of Sabah, a town surrounded with cocoa and palm oil plantations. Besides that, it is also a valuable timber exporting port and the city even has its own airport for domestic flights.

Day 1

You will be picked up in the east coast town of Lahad Datu Airport and transferred by road to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Upon arrival guide briefing and check in to your room, which comes complete with private balcony, air conditioner, ceiling fan and hot water shower. Nestled within the rainforest beside the Lipad River. Visit the Trogon Hall gallery and briefing on birds, insects and animals.

In the afternoon, visit the active Lipad Mud Volcano which provides a mineral salt lick for wildlife. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be responsible for a fine complexion.

After dinner, enjoy a video presentation on Tabin’s natural wonders, followed by a night safari to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds.


Day 2

Join the early morning bird walk at 6.30am. After breakfast, drive to the core area and trek to Lipad Waterfall. Take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a natural and refreshing shower under the waterfall. Alternatively explore the surrounding vegetation or just relax.

In the evening, join the dusk drive to look out for more nocturnal wildlife & birds coming out to look for food during this time of the day.

After dinner, go for a night walk along the trail nearby the resort in search of sleeping birds, frog and nocturnal wildlife.


Day 3

Breakfast, Mud certificate presentation and free time until check out. Check out from Tabin at 1.30pm.

End of Tour

The reserve only offers one accommodation option operated by Tabin Wildlife Resort. There are ten units of River Lodges and ten units of Hill Lodges, each housing a twin-bedded or double-bedded room with en-suite bathroom, hot water shower, ceiling fan, and a private balcony overlooking Lipad river or the hillside forest. Lucky visitors will be able to wake up to the sounds of gibbons or honking hornbills with their magnificent casques.

You can fly to Lahad Datu Airport (LDU) direct from Kota Kinabalu.


Arrival by land

You can travel to Lahad Datu by express bus from Kota Kinabalu (approx. 7 hours), Semporna (approx. 2 hours), Sandakan (approx. 4 hours), and Tawau (approx. 4 hours).
