Trail runner Jassica “Jess” Lintanga has long been a familiar name in Sabah’s running community.
With the Tropical Rainforest Run 2025 fast approaching, she shares what keeps her connected to the trails and to the event that has shaped her journey.
1. When did running shift from being just a hobby to becoming a true passion for you?
Jess: Since joining a trail running race 10 years ago, trail running has become more than just a hobby.
2. What’s one key lesson you’ve learned from running the trails here in Sabah?
Jess: It has taught me to appreciate the beauty of our nature, to be grateful for what we have instead of chasing what’s missing, and to always value the friends we have by our side.
3. Your quote, “The best runs are when I forget I’m running… The trail is my home,” beautifully reflects your connection with nature. Can you share what inspired those words?
Jess: Nature gives me endless inspiration for my crafts. Every time I run, it feels like the trees are whispering, reminding me that even though we face trials in life, hope will always exist, as long as we keep striving.
4. You’ve been part of TRR since 2019. What makes this year’s event special for you?
Jess: I’ve taken part in the TRR since its very first edition, and this year feels extra special because I want to see if I can break my personal record.
5. What do you expect from this year’s route, and how do you think it will challenge you?
Jess: I think this year’s route will be even more beautiful than last year’s. The biggest challenge, for me, will be reaching the first Cut-Off Time (COT) at the Mt. Maria summit.
6. Were there any unexpected moments or obstacles during the race that stood out?
Jess: Usually, the most unexpected obstacle is health.
7. What’s next for you on your running journey?
Jess: I’ll definitely continue my love for trail running. Running in the forest is my way to rest my mind.
