What Is Sabah Fest, Anyway?
First introduced in 1988, Sabah Fest is an annual cultural festival that celebrates the rich heritage, traditions, and diversity of Sabah’s people through dance, music, cuisine, and ethnic performances. Over the decades, it has grown from a local celebration into one of the state’s most important platforms for showcasing Sabah’s identity to both locals and visitors.
This year’s edition carries extra significance: Sabah Fest 2026 also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Sabah Tourism Board (STB). The festival will double as a celebration of STB’s five-decade journey, bringing together cultural heritage and tourism milestones under one big, colourful event.
What to Expect: Activity Highlights
This year’s Sabah Fest will be launched on 29 August 2026 at Gaya Street. Here’s what you’ll find around the festival grounds:

How to Prepare for Sabah Fest 2026
A little planning goes a long way for a street festival like this. Here’s what to sort out beforehand:
General Info
Sabah Fest 2026 takes place at Gaya Street, in the heart of Kota Kinabalu. Since it’s an open-street event, expect crowds, standing areas, and a lively, walk-around atmosphere rather than assigned seating. Do note that Gaya Street will be under partial road closure from 26–30 August ahead of and during the festival.
Accommodation
If you’re travelling in for the festival, book your stay in or around Kota Kinabalu city centre early. Gaya Street sits right in the downtown area, so a central hotel means you can walk to the festivities instead of worrying about late-night transport.
Transportation
Given the street closure and expected crowds, consider ride-hailing or grab a parking spot early in nearby commercial areas. Walking in from a nearby hotel is your easiest bet if you’re staying downtown.
What to Bring
Pack smart and you’ll enjoy the night without any hiccups:
- A mini portable fan: Kota Kinabalu has been especially hot lately, and with a crowd on the streets, a personal fan will keep you comfortable.
- Cash or e-wallet: You’ll want this handy for food, drinks, and local merchandise at the stalls.
