IN THEORY, Sabah should be a wonderful place to own pets, given the lush surroundings of beaches, jungle, trails, and waterfalls found everywhere. After all, why should our furry family members be left behind while we explore our beautiful state.

For those who would like to explore a part of Sabah within driving distance, filled with possible adventure and beautiful scenery, Kudat is a great option. Just three hours drive away, the northern district is lined with beautiful secluded beaches, gorgeous scenery and unexplored jungle, and some private accommodation for those inclined for some luxury.

After an exciting road trip, wind through the villagers and make your way to Serendipity Villa, one of the few places that unabashedly welcomes pets.

Pets and their humans are treated to lush gardens that are connected to the other villas in the Kudat Riviera vicinity and also fronting a prime spot to watch the sunset. The four-bedroom villa shares a common area, kitchen and pool that is open to all, and the lush landscape in front allow ample space for playtime for your furbabies.

In the mornings, take a long stroll along the beach or a dip in the clear blue water before breakfast which will be made for you by the cook on-site. Breakfast is almost always eggs with sausage and toast. Then perhaps a nap is in order or perhaps a dip in the inviting pool to cool off from the afternoon sun before another stroll along the beach at sunset.

Dogs will enjoy running free along the stretch of beach that is usually empty, and have free reign over the sea and the beautiful gardens that front the villas while cats will enjoy the shade and many other areas to lounge in or explore.

Days are slow at Serendipity Villa but for some adventure, consider exploring the trails in the area or go star-gazing at night. Kudat itself is a cultural hub – visit Rungus villages to see how they weave baskets and beads, make traditional gongs, or harvest honey.

A 30-minute drive away, surfing can be experienced at the beach leading up to the tip of Borneo, which is a must-see for all visiting Kudat.

Back at Serendipity Villa, each room in is beautifully appointed with wooden accents and timber roofs, a cross between exotic and modern. There is a balcony if you are on the first floor, or front porch if you are on the ground floor. Because there is little to no reception, WiFi is available. But who needs the internet when you have a first class view and great company?
