Sabah Tourism Awards 2019 Winner: Best Dining Experience (Stand Alone)
by Azeera Az.

Grabbing the win twice at Sabah Tourism Awards (in 2017 and 2019) for Best Dining Experience in the Stand Alone category, Sakagura Japanese Restaurant proves they are the best of the best restaurants in Kota Kinabalu.

The restaurant stays true to its Hokkaido essence, ensuring that you’ll have the most authentic Japanese experience from the moment you set your foot inside their warm traditional ambience to serving you high quality ingredients flown directly from Japan. Their food is prepared by two skillful Japanese chefs in order to heighten the Japanese cuisine experience.

Sakagura Japanese Restaurant first opened its doors in March 2015, and is owned by Mr Akira Nagata. The restaurant is the first branch of his family business outside of Japan.

Sakagura is a combination of the Japanese words “saké” (an alcoholic beverage from Japan) and “gura” which means brewery. True to its words, the restaurant serves a variety of saké choices and saké inspired mocktails for you to have a taste.

One of their food highlights  is the Premium Assorted Sashimi which consists of five different types of fresh raw seafood – Tuna, Kampachi (yellowtail fish), Salmon, Scallop and Sea Urchins. For those who have never tried sashimi or raw sea urchins, we recommend having your first taste at Sakagura as it is as fresh as it gets!

The Japanese experience won’t be complete without having a delicious bowl of hot ramen. One of the best on their menu is the Chicken Collagen Ramen. For a wider range of ramen options, you can visit two of their other restaurants that concentrates only on ramen noodle dishes: Ichizo Ramen in Suria Sabah or their newly opened Ramen Kumo in Lintas Plaza (non-halal).

For those who love comfort food, you can opt for their Oyakodon Chicken & Egg Rice bowl set. The dish consists of a bed of rice topped with chicken and egg (hence the word ‘oyako’ meaning ‘parent and child’) and includes side dishes of miso-soup, chawan mushi salad and Japanese pickles.

Another must try in their menu is their Osaka Style Okonomiyaki which is a savory pancake layered with fried noodles and filling choices of scallop, shrimp, and chicken.

Mr. Akira’s favorite in their menu is the Fried Chicken (Karaage), which is fried to perfection – leaving the skin crunchy on the outside, while the meat still juicy on the inside.
