My first exposure to ‘Ultimate’ was in high school where some friends of mine would play at the local park after school.
As a couch potato then, I mostly just watched my friends throw that bright yellow disc as it soared through the air – until I finally joined in for the first time and realised, “Hey, this game is pretty fun!”

How to Play Ultimate Frisbee
1. Gather a Team of 7 Players
Ultimate Frisbee is typically played as a mixed-gender sport, with teams usually consisting of four male and three female players. The game is played between two teams of seven on a grass field similar in size to a football field. Each team defends one end zone on opposite sides of the field.
2. Understand the Objective of Ultimate Frisbee
The goal of the game is to pass the disc among teammates and advance it down the field to score in the opposing team’s end zone. Players cannot run while holding the disc and must pass it to teammates to keep the play going.
3. Basic Rules to Keep in Mind
- No Running with the Disc: Players must establish a pivot foot when catching the disc and pass it to a teammate.
- Turnovers: If a pass is dropped, intercepted, or goes out of bounds, possession switches to the opposing team.
- Scoring: A point is scored when a player catches the disc in the opponent’s end zone.
- Self-Officiated: Ultimate Frisbee is known for its “Spirit of the Game,” meaning players make their own calls and uphold fair play.
