In our debut episode, join us as we get to know Sandra, a talented Sabahan artist known for her expressive illustrations. We hope her story inspires you as she shares her journey of turning her passion for drawing into a thriving business.
Q&A Session:
1. How did you start your journey into the art world and what is the inspiration for HARU?
– Are you a full-time artisan or is this something you do on the side?
Back in university, I had a pet cat named Haru while living in Kuala Lumpur. I always dreamed of taking her on an adventure around my hometown, Sabah. Since I couldn’t do that in real life, I turned that dream into an art concept, and that’s how HARU was born!
As for my profession, I have a full-time job at an optical shop. Art is my escape, my happy place.
2. I noticed your art incorporates local Sabahan culture and elements. Could you share with us why the Sabahan culture is an important influence in your work?
Sabah is full of vibrant colours, filled with unique wildlife and friendly people. Here, uttering Aramaiti in itself almost immediately creates a bond. It can turn strangers into friends. I want my art to introduce Sabah’s charm to everyone!
3. Share a little bit about your creative process when you work on your craft? (How you start and finish an art project, from the concept to the execution)
My imagination runs wild! I love imagining and creating stories. I love asking what if, like, what if animals could celebrate Chinese New Year together? Then, I started sketching and bringing my ideas to life using my iPad and computer.
4. Are there any challenges that you’ve faced in running Haru Art Room, and how did you overcome them?
TIME! After working all day, I’m often drained. But passion is the best fuel. When you love something enough, you’ll always find a way.
5. Do you have a favourite memory of one of your success stories that became a turning point in Haru Art Room’s journey?
When people told me they regretted not being able to find or buy my artwork during their visit to Sabah and even planned to come back just for it! That moment made me realize the significance of what I was creating.
6. As technology is advancing everyday, how has digital technology influenced Haru’s operations and the art forms explored within?
Digital tools make life easier. If I mess up, UNDO saves the day! Social media is a free global gallery, letting people from all over the world see my work, even reaching audiences overseas.
7. Are there any upcoming projects or expansion plans that you’re particularly excited about?
Not yet, but who knows? Maybe something amazing is just around the corner!
8. Any tips for aspiring artists looking to establish their presence in the art community?
Don’t be scared of criticism! The right people will love your work. The right audience will appreciate your work. Just keep doing what makes you happy.
9. A message to your future self on what you hope to achieve for Haru Art Room in the future.
Stay happy, keep creating, and never stop having fun with art!
