Q&A with Jess:
What first sparked your interest in crafting traditional brass jewelry? Was there a personal story or experience that led you to this path?
Besides my running legs and weary heart, I wanted my hands to stay occupied— so I don’t have time to entertain the noise in my head. It takes a lot of energy, yes, but I also love the sound of the hammer’s clinking that fills the space within my soul.

How do your cultural roots or community influence your jewelry designs?
In the Tobilung community, I learned that wearing copper accessories is a symbol of pride, suitable for both celebrations and everyday use. For instance, when a young woman wears a heavy Lungkaki (brass anklet), she is regarded highly as a diligent individual. The heavier the Lungkaki, the better.

Can you share some traditional symbols or motifs you use in your work, and what they represent?
Sure. Some of the symbols I incorporate into my work are inspired by traditional motifs from various ethnic groups, including the Dusun Liwan, Dusun Tobilung, and Murut. Each motif carries its own cultural significance and meaning, which I try to reflect in my art.
Your creations are always in demand. How do you balance customer orders with other hobbies and responsibilities?
To maintain a balanced life, I focus on three key aspects to gain clarity in organising my daily schedule. First, I ensure that what I do benefits the community. Second, it must be good for my family. And third, it should positively impact my mental health.
As a runner yourself, how does your passion for running influence your creativity or discipline when it comes to jewelry making?
I practice my sport discipline to fulfill all requests. Understanding my motivation keeps me inspired to fulfill orders. While creating, my imagination is at its peak. I build my own world where Jess is the main character. Just like running an ultra marathon, it’s all about mindset. Endurance is crucial to avoid giving up easily.
Is there a particular piece that holds special meaning for you? Can you tell us why?
My initial creation holds the most sentiment. TINUTUK & RINUTA (the heartbroken bracelet series) Although it’s quite simple, I made it to release the feelings within. The world is indeed like that; nothing is perfect, nothing lasts, but we must go through it with an open heart.

Have any of your designs been passed down or inspired by older generations in your family or community?
This is also one of the things that motivated me to learn how to create my own legacy. I was taught from a young age that if I wanted something, I had to seek it out and create it myself.
What do you want people to understand about this rare craft, and how do you encourage more people to take it up?
While copper may not shine as brightly as gold or diamonds, I hope every family has its own collection of brass accessories to pass down as a legacy to future generations. Just imagine what will happen to our traditions in 50 years. Perhaps by then, all the skilled copper artisans will be gone. So, if not now, when?
