In a novel step towards invigorating Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront with tourism appeal, SBC Corporation Berhad unveiled the waterfront portion of the Jesselton Quay Masterplan, codenamed “The Quayside”. The Quayside, a privately owned public realm with its 400m length, is set to be the first and perhaps only “managed quayside walkway” that is complemented with alfresco dining and leisure F&B options. And the good news is that completion will coincide with the delivery of Q Suites, the final waterside tower by 2028.
The Quayside sits on the single largest site (10 acres) of the old Kinabalu Port and is themed along the idea where “New Gaya Street meets Xintiandi”, being a matching appeal of the city’s most famous heritage street Gaya Street with the urban vibe of Xintiandi of Shanghai.
Strategically located near Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) and right next to the international cruise terminal, Quayside will benefit from the large visitor footfall that throng these two magnets. SBC believes that the future crowds from the entire waterfront vicinity will converge to an benefit from this new human scale hotspot with activated street attractions set amongst, heritage themed buildings and not to mention the waterfront.
The Quayside will also have opportunities to showcase Sabah’s rich heritage and culture either at the Q Shoppes or Q Square. Q Marche itself will offer premium products and services within an upscaled bazaar setting. Music, art festivals and weekend flea markets will be a regular feature to reaffirm Quayside’s appeal as a must visit destination for everyone.
With the first phase of the JQ masterplan realised, SBC is confident that by 2028, the rest of the masterplan will be delivered, fulfilling Kota Kinabalu as one of the best cities in the region for culture, food, social and leisure.
